Course Overview

Suppliers play a key role in our business today and even more so in the future. The partnership with key suppliers is a major lever for agility and reducing real costs.

This interactive course is for all managers involved in procurement and will enable them to understand the increasing importance of suppliers and how to manage them. It will explain the principles of make/buy decisions and will show how sourcing strategies are defined and implemented for various purchasing groups. It shows how supplier scheduling is at the heart of the developing relationship and how mutual business gains are sought.

  • The Oliver Wight Business Maturity map and how it is applied to assess the maturity and way forward for Procurement.
  • Sourcing strategies including commodity or sector profiling, regional and global challenges, and outsourcing of services.
  • Leveraging an excellent supply base throughout all of the business processes.
  • The principles of Integrated Business Planning and their extension into the incoming supply chain especially how lead times may be substantially reduced and the role of time fences in managing partnerships.
  • How to leverage global and regional procurement and when its adoption is an advantage.
  • Total Cost of Acquisition (TCA) and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and when they are best used.
  • Managing the supplier base including supplier rating systems, maintaining the right number of suppliers, developing the relationship, and managing a full service partnership.
  • The use of value stream mapping to identify and remove waste from the incoming supply chain.
  • How to measure procurement.
  • How to ensure people skills are developed and deployed appropriately to fit the business needs and the strategic intent of the organisation.
  • The course covers key topics including make/buy decisions and sourcing strategies; total cost of ownership (TCO) and its role in assessing and selecting suppliers; supplier scheduling in an ERP environment and managing and developing supplier relationships (SRM).

  • Use the Oliver Wight Proven Path process to plan and implement change.
    Identify the key roles in procurement and determine the capabilities and personal attributes required for each.
